The unexpected return of the Nuijamiehet!
The young and bright students of the jazz department of Sibelius Academy formed a band called Nuijamiehet in 1996 to perform their own musical ambitions and rather special compositions. The ambitious band was perhaps ahead of its time, and according to the band, the world was not yet ready for the vision of saxophonist Mikko Innanen, guitarist Kalle Kalima, bassist Lasse Lindgren and drummer Mika Kallio. When the band ended their journey together in 2001 they had made a radio tape, played gigs mainly in the Helsinki metropolitan area, and participated in European jazz band competitions in Getxo, Spain, and Hoeilaart, Belgium. In addition, the band played in Free Voices – with the trio of Marc Ducret in Finland and released a CD, “Nuijamiehet” (2000) on the newly formed label Fiasko Records.
Now the band is making an unexpected but awaited return and is honored to open the 10th anniversary of the Porvoo Jazz Festival. 20 years have passed – would the world be ready for this bold quartet now?
