Porvoo has its own share of jazz expertise. In honor of this, the Porvoo Jazz Club Goes Local has been established to showcase local talents. In the second-to-last jazz night of the year, we will hear from a local trumpeter as Kalevi Louhivuori’s Sun Trio, with a long history, takes the stage for a comeback after a 7-year hiatus. When asked what the future holds for the band, they replied that something bright and luminous is on the way\u2026 Sun Trio’s international career began in Reykjavik, Iceland, in 2006 when they won the Young Nordic Jazz Comets competition, with Kalevi also winning the soloist award. The jury praised the group as follows: \u201cA polished ensemble of skilled and dynamic musicians that creates its own musical space in line with the Nordic lyrical tradition.\u201d
The justification for the soloist award stated: \u201cAn overwhelmingly unique soloist who brings new dimensions to his instrument, both technically and musically.\u201d <\/p>\n\n
Sun Trio’s intense, delicate, and simultaneously massive soundscape has received critical acclaim since their first album. The trio’s collective playing has been refined to perfection over the past 10 years. The Italian-American record label Cam Jazz has released nine of Kalevi’s albums, with the latest, “Reborn,” being the fourth by Sun Trio. <\/p>\n\n
“Reborn” has received numerous 5-star reviews and has been highlighted in New York Jazz Magazine.<\/p>\n\n
. Sun Trio has toured the largest jazz festivals in America and Canada. “Reborn” was released during the band’s tour in Japan in October 2016.
This band has, in the words of jazz critic Jukka Hauru, \u201c…risen like a comet to become a hot name in the jazz scene.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
